Careers & Taking The ‘Next Step’

Albert Einstein once said: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value” (n.d.). Employers seek employees who have above average knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to their workplace. They are looking for somebody who can add value to their company; they are not concerned if you beat Jimmy in the four-hundred meter dash in grade six. Having an exceptional resume and interview skills will help you stand out to employers.

A resume is a presentation of a person’s qualifications, skills, and background. It is extremely important that a resume is created to catch a future employer’s attention. As the hiring process can be arduous and challenging for the employer, resumes are often only glanced at for thirty seconds or less – and then they are placed in a ‘short-list’ pile or a ‘no’ pile (Anderberg, 2013).

With this in mind, it is very important to make sure a resume is written effectively. A well-written format will let a potential employer know about yourself. A resume is the first impression an employer will have, so there are a few things to think about when creating a resume. According to Workopolis, a potential employer is glancing at your resume to determine if you care about the job you’re applying for, ensuring you have the qualifications, and that you acquire common sense. Common sense means that the employer does not want unimportant information (Anderberg, 2013). Whether writing a resume for career advancement or to simply get into the job market, it is the ‘ticket in the company door’. It is first opportunity to attract attention. The next step to achieving your dream job is practicing good interview skills.

Interviews are all about first impressions. You have about 10 minutes to sell yourself to your new employer to get them to like you. “The manner in which you present yourself often determines if you are

offered the job. You want to establish yourself as a highly competent individual who is well suited for the position” (McQuerrey, 2012). To achieve this, I have gathered a list of the top 3 things to do during an interview: Present yourself well, possess a strong handshake, and know your resume well. To sophistically display yourself you should dress to impress, appear confident, smile, speak clearly, and have good posture. A good handshake is what employers look for. Whether you’re a male or female, possessing a good handshake shows confidence and is memorable for future employers. Interviewers often ask questions based on your resume and experience, so it is a good idea to have your resume memorized. You need to be able to quickly and confidently answer any questions they might have. Although that covers some of the things to do in a interview, here’s a list of  The top 10 things NOT to do in an interview.

In summary, employers look for valuable employees. Having an impressive resume and outstanding interview skills will help you be successful in letting employers review your knowledge, skills and qualifications.

Employability skills are essential qualifications an employer looks for in an individual. During interview and hiring processes, a manager asks questions of prospective employees that will determine whether the person would be an asset to the workplace. There are numerous employability skills to consider, however, the most important include leadership skills, organization, teamwork, volunteerism, and efficiency.

Being a leader is a very good quality to have going into the workplace. The main reason why people look for leaders is because they help the company prosper. Having a lot of initiative, a positive attitude, patience, responsibility, flexibility, and taking the blame when necessary are all traits that a leader should acquire. Some roles that leaders in a workplace practice include: listening and supporting other employees, delegating tasks to people who will succeed, making logical decisions, and setting objectives for the company. Being a leader is a very good employability skill to have and could help you get the job that you’ve always wanted. To be a great employee, one of the skills you might want to have is being organized. You need to be organized because no one wants to work with a messy employee. When you are organized, you will become a worker that people will like to work with. You can get the job done efficiently and bring your stress level down because you know that everything is in the right spot. Being organized also makes the work area look clean and professional, which sends a good image to the customers. You will be able to manage your time more effectively because you will know where to look for certain items instead of searching. Organizational skills are very important for getting a job and being a good employee.

Teamwork is an employability skill that is beneficial to possess when working in an organization. Teamwork creates a positive workplace environment and ensures higher quality outcomes with richer ideas. Employees work together to accomplish goals and combine ideas to achieve success. Working in a team environment is much more effective as it allows for a faster rate of completion and all employees are able to work more efficiently.

Volunteering is a fundamental aspect that many employers seek in employees. It is important because it allows employers to see that you are willing to give back to your community and possess qualities such as compassion, empathy, and humanity. Giving back to your community is imperative because it allows you to form a profound relationship with the people who will utilize the different departments in your surrounding community. When you demonstrate characteristics such as compassion, empathy and humanity, it is easier for others to make an essential connection with you as an employee.

There are two elements of efficiency which illustrate its’ importance. Firstly, saving time is one key element. For example, no one wants to work within a tiny time frame. However, many employees can not finish large project until last minute, and it has become a common phenomenon. On the other hand, quality is also an important element. Even though many employees could finish work last minute, they usually ignore the quality of the project. Therefore, when employees are working together, efficiency is a necessary element. It means that employees should finish projects and tasks on time.

In conclusion, there are many employability skills that are beneficial to each individual. However, it is your responsibility to stay organized and productively participate in your workplace and community.

Academic Skills: Studying

Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Studying skills are a crucial component in academics in order to fully comprehend and simplify all of the important concepts in a course. Flash cards, time management and organization, reviewing notes and homework, completing given reviews and participating in study groups are all considerable approaches to success.

Flash cards are an efficient and cheap tool to take advantage of to aid in studying. From past experience flash cards are a compact tool to use because you can bring them anywhere. Such as a waiting room, the bus, home, or to a study group session. They can be used for games like Jeopardy. Linked here is a good video that demonstrates how to create your own customized flash cards.

Time management is a very vital part in staying organized and studying. Some things that help me stay organized and stay on track are: an agenda, being strict when it comes to studying and always being prepared. An agenda really helps when studying because you can put the test and assignment dates, so you know what your week looks like. When it comes to midterms or exam time, you can go to your agenda and organize study times for your days. For example, Monday you could concentrate on one subject then on Tuesday be working on another. Linked here is a good link on 10 ways to improve your time management skills.

Rewriting class notes and completing the assigned homework is an effective study strategy for all types of learners.  During class instruction, students can often become distracted and not fully understand the concepts taught.  If a student takes the time to rewrite and review notes following lectures/lessons, they will gain a better understanding of the information.  In addition, if any of the material is not understood or missed, it allows for time to ask questions next lesson.  Rewritten notes are usually more clear and precise as time is taken to re-think the lesson.

In addition to other strategies, reviewing notes can give learners many helps. In college, students obtain information from face to face environment and online. Therefore, reviewing notes is becoming more efficient for students. In order to solve problems which students probably have in class, reviewing notes is a necessary behaviour. Moreover, if students are kind of confused about what they have learned, reviewing notes could improve student’s understanding about objects or topics.Basically, students are struggle from blending learning environment. Therefore, students who would like to review notes usually have better understanding than others.

Study groups are very beneficial to students attending college or university.  Students join academic groups and are able to meet at decided-upon times to work on assignments and/or study for tests.  This ensures students spend more time at their school work and less time procrastinating.  Studying on your own has limits as it only allows the student to see things from one perspective.  Study groups allow people to share ideas and gain different perspectives on the topic, thus allowing them to be more thorough.  In addition, students are, at times, able to learn new material faster and more efficiently.

Theses are reason why studying skills are a crucial component in academic to fully comprehend the important concepts in a course. By using flash cards to study for test, reviewing, homework to help you understand better. also being organized and managing your time so you can find what your looking for quicker and so you can study and do your homework at same time.
