Albert Einstein once said: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value” (n.d.). Employers seek employees who have above average knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to their workplace. They are looking for somebody who can add value to their company; they are not concerned if you beat Jimmy in the four-hundred meter dash in grade six. Having an exceptional resume and interview skills will help you stand out to employers.

A resume is a presentation of a person’s qualifications, skills, and background. It is extremely important that a resume is created to catch a future employer’s attention. As the hiring process can be arduous and challenging for the employer, resumes are often only glanced at for thirty seconds or less – and then they are placed in a ‘short-list’ pile or a ‘no’ pile (Anderberg, 2013).

“Hey Jim! Get a load of this resume… guy says he’s proficient in Word!”

With this in mind, it is very important to make sure a resume is written effectively. A well-written format will let a potential employer know about yourself. A resume is the first impression an employer will have, so there are a few things to think about when creating a resume. According to Workopolis, a potential employer is glancing at your resume to determine if you care about the job you’re applying for, ensuring you have the qualifications, and that you acquire common sense. Common sense means that the employer does not want unimportant information (Anderberg, 2013). Whether writing a resume for career advancement or to simply get into the job market, it is the ‘ticket in the company door’. It is first opportunity to attract attention. The next step to achieving your dream job is practicing good interview skills.

Interviews are all about first impressions. You have about 10 minutes to sell yourself to your new employer to get them to like you. “The manner in which you present yourself often determines if you are

offered the job. You want to establish yourself as a highly competent individual who is well suited for the position” (McQuerrey, 2012). To achieve this, I have gathered a list of the top 3 things to do during an interview: Present yourself well, possess a strong handshake, and know your resume well. To sophistically display yourself you should dress to impress, appear confident, smile, speak clearly, and have good posture. A good handshake is what employers look for. Whether you’re a male or female, possessing a good handshake shows confidence and is memorable for future employers. Interviewers often ask questions based on your resume and experience, so it is a good idea to have your resume memorized. You need to be able to quickly and confidently answer any questions they might have. Although that covers some of the things to do in a interview, here’s a list of  The top 10 things NOT to do in an interview.

In summary, employers look for valuable employees. Having an impressive resume and outstanding interview skills will help you be successful in letting employers review your knowledge, skills and qualifications.
